Can You Recognize These Celebrities With and Without Makeup?

Being a celebrity is all about projecting a certain brand and image.

A celebrity's persona is as important as the music they make or the movies the appear in, and with the advent of social media any photo taken of a celeb by any passing stranger can alter their image forever.

But recently, a new online trend has been taking the internet by storm. Celebrities have been challenging the concept that they need to look at their most glamorous at all times by uploading photos of themselves in unpolished looks under the hashtags #NoMakeUp and #WokeUpLikeThis, showing they are real people, just like everyone else.

But sometimes, the difference between one look and another is so radical, that it's almost impossible to recognize the celebrity in question!

What do these famous people look like before they put their face on? Read on to find out.

Adele

Adele is one of the greatest recording artists in recent history, and her voice has been revered and celebrated throughout the world - which goes a long way towards explaining why she can, very easily, style herself a diva. But even divas have their unglamorous days, and Adele isn't afraid to be seen in public without blush or eyeliner. In fact, she regularly updates her Instagram account with no-makeup photos like the one below, and the difference is striking - although, in our opinion, she is no less beautiful for it.

Tyra Banks

While many celebrities rely on their image, it's safe to say that Tyra Banks on her image more than almost anyone.

One of the world's greatest supermodels, the founder and host of America's Next Top Model and the first African American model to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, there's little doubt that Banks' image is highly cultivated and maintained - which makes her choice to upload a makeup free photo to social media all the more brave.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria has played colorful characters in a long succession of television shows and movies, and is probably best known for her role as Gabrielle Solis on ABC's Desperate Housewives, for which she received critical acclaim, including both Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.

Her distinguished look has come to be associated with class and affluence, but even when she doesn't have her makeup on, Longoria still looks dignified and impressive!

Emilia Clarke

Emilia Clarke is best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, but even hardcore fans sometimes fail to recognize her without her character's signature white hair - so when she removes her makeup and reverts to her naturally brown hair, she looks almost nothing like her character on screen. That being said, she still looks great!

Cindy Crawford

Back in the '80s and '90s, Cindy Crawford used to repeatedly grace the covers of magazines like Vogue, W, People, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Allure, to name a few, as well as numerous fashion campaigns for the likes of Versace, Calvin Klein, Gap and Revlon.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest supermodels in the history of the profession, it's no big surprise that her looks aren't dependent on cosmetics, and that she looks just as glamorous without mascara or concealer as she does on the runway.

Madonna

Madonna, the undisputed Queen of Pop, has gone through countless looks, phases and transformations, with one constant tying them all together: she always manages to surprise and inspire us, and she always looks amazing - so it's no big surprise that even without makeup or a stylized look, Madonna still looks great.

Still, it's refreshing and unusual to see her without her signature red lipstick, and interesting to see what the megastar looks like when she's just relaxing at home.

Dakota Johnson

Dakota Mayi Johnson was more or less born into fame - no big surprise, considering her parents are Hollywood superstars Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

She made her film debut when she was just ten years old alongside her mother in Crazy in Alabama, and, after graduating from high school, went on auditions in Los Angeles, landing roles in movies like The Social Network and 21 Jump Street, before landing the lead role in the Fifty Shades franchise, opposite Charlie Hunnam.

With superstardom in her genes, it's hardly surprising that Johnson looks just as amazing sans makeup as she does on the red carpet!

Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne is still very young - she was born in 1992! - but she's managed to accomplish a great many things so far. From top model to singer to writer to actress, it seems like there's hardly anything this talented young woman can't do if she puts her mind to it.

She got her start in modelling thanks to her unique look - and her refusal to trim her prominent eyebrows - so seeing her without makeup seems to make sense!

Beyoncé

Beyoncé has been rocking our world since the late '90s, starting with Destiny's Child and then with her solo career, becoming one of the most successful recording and performing artists in music history.

She is truly a force to be reckoned with, and makeup or no, Queen B is perpetually fierce.

Take a look at this photo for instance: sure, she may not be wearing her war paint, but we would still not want to go up against her, no matter how serene she looks.

Kim Kardashian may have her own personal cosmetics brand - KKW - but that doesn't mean she thinks people should always wear makeup.

In this candid photo, Kim looks as ravishing as always with a natural look, but we do have to admit that seeing her without cosmetics on is a little unnerving.

Whatever look you choose, though, is fine by us. You're a queen no matter what you do.

Katy Perry, the California Girl with strong feelings about kissing other people, has definitely left her mark on the world of bubblegum pop ever since she started performing, way back in 2001.

A true pop star, Perry's glittering persona has been fuelling the glitter industry for nearly 20 years - so when her then-husband, Russell Brand, accidentally uploaded this candid picture he took of her in their home, fans got a pretty rare glimpse at her at her most vulnerable.

She still looks pretty darn good, even in a candid, accidental photo, though!

And don't worry - while Russell Brand and her are no longer a thing, Perry is engaged to Orlando Bloom now!

Sharon Stone has been acting since 1980, but made it to real mainstream success after her unforgettable role in Paul Berhoeven's Basic Instinct, which earned her first Golden Globe nomination.

After that, Stone became one of the most instantly recognizable actresses in the film industry, and went on to star in many more blockbusters, as well as to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress - so glamour and a highly maintained look are things that the actress is pretty comfortable with, and seeing her without her makeup on is a pretty rare occurrence.

Marilyn Manson

While many male celebrities often wear makeup to cover blemishes or accentuate certain features, it is usually applied in a way that's difficult to notice. Not so with the shock goth rock artist Marilyn Manson, who's made a career out of his startling look. In fact, we've grown so accustomed to seeing him wearing his white face mask and dark lipstick, that it's practically impossible to recognize him without it!

Still, Manson, whose actual name is Brian Hugh Warner, sometimes goes out without makeup, and even his staunchest fans have trouble recognizing him then.

Jennifer Lopez

J.Lo, also known as "JLO" and Jennifer Lynn Lopez, started her career as a dancer, before turning to acting in 1993, becoming the first Latin actress to earn over a million dollars for her role in a film. In 1999, J.Lo decided to pursue a career in music, and soon turned into a pop sensation.

She uploaded this photo of herself to Instagram, in which she is without any makeup on, moments before she went on stage in a huge Las Vegas concert.

She captioned it “Just trying to get mentally prepared," and while this is a different look for her, we can still tell it's Jenny from the block.

Alicia Keys

In 2016, Alicia Keys attended a photoshoot for her album where she wore no makeup at all - and felt empowered. Since then, she's opted to not wear makeup at all - even at the Grammys.

"It doesn’t have anything to do with makeup or no makeup," she said. "It has to do with who are you, what makes you feel good, how do you want to express that and even just asking the questions — What do I feel? How do I feel good? However that is, you should do it.”

At the Today show, she went on to explain further:

"I love my lip gloss, I love my blush, I love my eyeliner. It's not about that. At the same time, I don't want to feel beholden — to have to do it."

That's right - Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor's stage name is Lorde - and we're willing to bet you know at least one of her songs by heart.

But just like you didn't recognize her name, Lorde says fans often don't recognize her face, whether she's wearing makeup or not!

Shakira, known by her full name as Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has been rocking our world since the early '90s - but attained international acclaim in 2001 when she released her first English language album, Laundry Service, in 2001, with its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever."

Since then, she's continued to release hit after hit, including "Hips Don't Lie" and the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)."

Whether she's wearing makeup or walking around her house with a frumpy bun, Shakira never fails to look amazing.

Miley Cyrus may be young, but she's managed to reinvent her image several times over during her surprisingly long career.

Lady Gaga has made a name for herself thanks to both her immense musical talent, as well as for her quirky sense of aesthetics and concealment of her face using various wigs, props and outfits.

In recent years, it seems like her defences have come down a bit, and in her recent breakthrough film, A Star is Born, she opted not to wear any makeup at all during the start of the film, where she portrays a young, up-and-coming musician.

Jennifer Garner first came to the public's attention after she started to portray CIA officer Sydney Bristow in the ABC spy-action television show Alias in 2001.

Alicia Silverstone first rose to prominence in a string of Aerosmith music videos, where she became widely known as "The Aerosmith Chick."

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick first rose to fame thanks to her role in the Twilight Saga films. It seemed like she would steal any scene she was in - and since then, she's continued to do so in movies like Up in the Air, Pitch Perfect and more.

Kendrick's public persona is perky and upbeat, so we were curious to see what she looks like with her guard down - and, unsurprisingly, she still looks perky and upbeat!

There's just something sincere about Kendrick that, makeup or no, shines through.

Some people have to work hard to appear glamorous. To others, it comes so naturally that you have to wonder if they're not actual, real life Disney princesses.

Take Kristen Bell, for instance.

In addition to actually voicing a real Disney princess - Anna, from Frozen, - her bubbly personality seems to shine through no matter what she does.

AnnaLynne McCord is known for playing "vixen type" characters with a dark or mean streak, including Naomi Clark in 90210, as well as the scheming Eden Lord on FX's critically acclaimed Nip/Tuck.

Nicki Minaj cultivates a fierce, in-your-face persona which is somehow both terrifying and magnetic at once.

Kelly Clarkson got her start after winning the first season of the reality competition show, American Idol, which resulted in her signing of a record deal with RCA Records.

Since then, she's released numerous albums, number one singles and won several Grammy Awards, selling over 25 million albums and 45 million singles worldwide.

In 2013, Clarkson married Brandon Blackstock, the son of her former manager Narvel Blackstock and then-stepson of country music legend Reba McEntire, and has since given birth to a daughter, River Rose, and a son, Remingron "Remy" Alexander. Much like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood got her start on American Idol, winning the show's fourth season in 2005.

Gwyneth Paltrow has appeared in so many films it would be impossible to list them all here.

But in addition to her prolific acting work, Paltrow is the founder of Goop, a lifestyle company and blog which promotes healthy living using some pretty out-there techniques and methods.

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl is best known for her starring role as Izzie Stevens on Grey's Anatomy, for which she's received multiple accolades and awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Since then, she's appeared in films like Knocked Up, 27 Dresses, The Ugly Truth and many more.

Zooey Deschanel started out with deadpan comedy roles in films like The Good Girl, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Yes Man and 500 Days of Summer, before she transitioned to more dramatic roles, until, in 2011, she returned to comedy as the lead actress in Fox's sitcom New Girl - a role which earned her an Emmy Award nomination and three Golden Globe Award nominations.

Thanks to her experience in comedy, Zooey is no stranger to appearing in unpolished and sometimes frumpy situations, and we're sure the humor of this #NoMakeUp photo she's uploaded isn't lost on her!

Lily Allen

Lily Allen got her start after uploading songs she wrote and recorded herself to MySpace, and she's always been about staying raw, unapologetic and sincere - so it's not surprising to see her uploading a photo sans makeup, and even less surprising to see she looks just as great without it as she does with her more "polished" look.

Allen seems to be traveling in her less "polished" photo, so it would make sense she would want to be comfortable, and we're especially appreciative of her earmuffs.

We first got to know Tori Spelling as Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210 way back in 1990 - the role she is probably still best known for.

She has, since then, appeared in many other films and TV shows, and even reprised the role of Donna in Beverly Hills, 90210's 2009 spin-off, 90210.

That same year, Spelling autobiography, Stori Telling, debuted at the top of the New York Times Best Seller list, and named the best celebrity autobiography of 2009 - and, in the same spirit of peeling back layers and unveiling herself, this candid #NoMakeUp selfie is also pretty great.

Demi Lovato is a successful actress and singer, and has been acting since the very young age of 10, with her first role on the children's television show Barney and Friends.

Since then, she's acted in numerous films, as well as appeared as herself on countless reality television shows, including Keeping up with the Kardashians and The X Factor, where she served as a judge/mentor.

In recent times, Lovato has taken to uploading a #NoMakeUp selfie from the gym every Monday.

Okay, so this #NoMakeUp selfie may not be entirely free of makeup - she clearly still has some eyeliner applied - but expecting Kylie Jenner to forge makeup entirely is a bit of a stretch, considering the fact that she is one of the most successful cosmetics entrepreneurs out there. She's so successful, in fact, that by March 2019, at the age of 21, Jenner became the world's youngest self-made billionaire.

Kylie is stunning both with and without makeup, but if you ask us, we actually like the makeup-free version better!

Pink

Pink has never shied away from confrontation, and both her musical style, her lyrics and her on-stage personas have always been in-your-face and unapologetic. So, it's no big surprise that on her social media profiles, Pink, whose full name is Alecia Beth Moore, regularly uploads #NoMakeUp selfies without feeling like she has to explain herself - because really, she doesn't!

This is her, just the way she wants to be, and her fans love her all the more for it.

Caitlyn Jenner

70-year-old Caitlyn Jenner has been very open with the public about her personal life, first sharing it in TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and later in her own reality TV show, I am Cait, which focused on her gender transition.

So, it's not surprising to see her makeup free. In recent years, we've seen few photos of her looking confident without any makeup and we salut her for that.

We all loved Jennifer Aniston ever since she first appeared on our screens as Rachel Green in the iconic TV show Friends back in the 90s. And almost two decades after the show has ended, Aniston is still rocking our world in Apple TV's The Morning Show, for which she's been nominated for numerous awards.

And she's not only impressing us with her talent, she's also taking part in viral trends and when she joined Instagram in 2019, her account had become a phenomenon in a matter of hours.
